Drak Challenge returns in 2027 with a weekend of paddling, adventure and family fun

After an enforced break in 2026, the N3TC Drak Challenge will return in 2027, promising paddlers, supporters and families an unforgettable weekend in the heart of the Southern Drakensberg from 30 to 31 January.

The cancellation of this year’s event due to the national Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak was a disappointment for the paddling community and local businesses alike. However, organisers are looking firmly ahead and are excited to welcome competitors back to one of South Africa’s most picturesque canoe races in one of the country’s premier getaway towns.

More than just a race, the N3TC Drak Challenge has become a summer tradition that brings together paddlers of all abilities, their families and outdoor enthusiasts for a weekend of sport, relaxation and adventure.

Set against the spectacular backdrop of the Southern Drakensberg, the event offers visitors the chance to escape the city and enjoy everything the region has to offer. From mountain views and fresh country air to local hospitality and outdoor activities, the Drak Challenge delivers an experience that extends well beyond the paddlers on the water.

“The Drak Challenge has always been about much more than canoe racing,” chairperson of the race organising committee Greg Hitchins said. “It’s a weekend where families come together, friends reconnect and paddlers enjoy one of the most beautiful venues in the country.

“While we were incredibly disappointed not to host the event in 2026, we’re looking forward to making the 2027 edition one to remember.”

The race itself remains one of the highlights of the South African river paddling calendar, attracting elite athletes chasing victory alongside social paddlers looking to tick off one of the country’s iconic river races.

“With excellent spectator viewing points, a welcoming race village and plenty to keep the whole family entertained, the event continues to offer something for everyone.

The organisers are encouraging paddlers to mark the 2027 event on their calendars and turn it into a summer getaway, taking advantage of the Southern Drakensberg’s accommodation, restaurants, hiking trails, the Drak Descent MTB race as well as the Run the Rivers trail run as well as all the other outdoor attractions.

The countdown to the return of one of South Africa’s favourite river races has officially begun with entry details and dates of opening entries to be confirmed.
