Drak Challenge lining up epic 2026 edition

The jewel of the Southern Drakensberg, the N3TC Drak Challenge, will once again wow paddlers and spectators alike from 31 January to 1 February 2026.

Now entrenched as one of South Africa’s premier river races, the Drak Challenge attracts paddlers from all over the country due to its unique appeal and one-of-a-kind hospitality.

The town of Underberg lights up over the weekend of the Drak Challenge with paddlers and supporters alike enjoying the crisp summer air and warm weather on offer.

With exciting rapids, jaw-dropping scenery, unpredictable water levels, and a sense of community that makes it more than just another race. Over two days and roughly 72 kilometres, paddlers are thrown into a test of skill and nerve that has earned the Drak its reputation as one of the most technical and rewarding events on the calendar.

Few races in the world can match the beauty of the Drakensberg. Crystal water, towering peaks, and a sense of wild isolation make every kilometre as memorable as it is demanding.

“Every year we have to make sure that the Drak Challenge continues to deliver on the promises that we make to our paddlers,” chairperson of the race organising committee Greg Hitchins said.

“Paddlers and their support teams always expect a certain level of hospitality and service, and we always strive to give them the most enjoyable weekend in the mountains.

“We can’t control the water, but we try and make sure we look after everything else.”

2026 will be the 32nd edition of the Drak Challenge and the race has seen all conditions possible with 2025 being arguably some of the best conditions the race has had.

The town of Underberg pulls out all the stops for the Drak Challenge and paddlers are encouraged to bring families for the weekend.

“Underberg and the surrounding areas are very special, especially in Summer and we encourage people to book accommodation as soon as possible.

“It’s the ideal environment to enjoy a weekend away and there is plenty on offer for the rest of the family during the weekend.”

Entries for the 2026 Drak Challenge will open on 1 November and paddlers are encouraged to get entries in as soon as possible.
